What is Radiation Therapy?

Radiation therapy uses carefully controlled high-energy beams (similar to stronger, more focused X-rays), or in some cases, tiny radioactive sources placed in the body. These beams are aimed at the tumor to damage cancer cells. It's a local treatment — directed only at the area that needs it — rather than something that circulates through the whole body the way some medicines do.

How does it kill cancer cells?

Cancer cells grow and divide (make copies of themselves) much faster than most healthy cells. To make copies of themselves they need a blueprint, which is DNA. The radiation damages the DNA, and when broken badly enough, the cancer cells can no longer make copies of themselves and eventually die. Over the course of treatment, more and more of the tumor cells are affected until the tumor no longer grows.

What does it do to the rest of my body?

Healthy cells can also be affected if they are in or near the treatment area, but most of them are better at repairing DNA damage than cancer cells are. That is why side effects are usually limited to the treated region (for example: bladder irritation while treating the adjacent prostate) and improve after treatment ends. Cells farther away from the beam receive little or no radiation, so the rest of your body is largely spared (for example: liver and lungs would be unaffected if treating the prostate).

Is it safe?

Yes. When planned and delivered by a radiation oncology team, it is a safe, standard treatment used for millions of people every year. Modern machines and computer planning shape the radiation to match the shape of the tumor as closely as possible, limiting the dose to healthy tissue. Your care team calculates the exact dose needed for benefit while keeping side effects as low as possible, and every treatment is checked for accuracy.

Is it experimental?

No. Radiation therapy has been a proven, standard part of cancer care for many decades. Techniques keep improving (better imaging, more precise beams, shorter courses in some cases), but the basic treatment itself is well-established and backed by large studies and long-term patient outcomes. Your doctors will recommend it only when evidence shows it is likely to help your specific situation.
